Newsyly: Fatou, the World's Oldest Gorilla, Celebrates Remarkable 68th Birthday

In a heartwarming story out of Berlin, Fatou, the world's oldest gorilla living in captivity, has celebrated her incredible 68th birthday at the Berlin Zoo!

Born in the wild in West Africa around 1957, Fatou arrived at the Berlin Zoo in 1959. This makes her not only the oldest gorilla alive today but also one of the last remaining gorillas with origins in the wild. The typical lifespan for gorillas in the wild is around 35-40 years, making Fatou's longevity truly exceptional.

To mark this special milestone on Sunday, April 13th, 2025, the Berlin Zoo presented Fatou with a delightful basket filled with her favorite treats. While she enjoys fruits like strawberries, plums, and blueberries, her keepers ensure her diet consists mainly of easily digestible vegetables due to her advanced age and lack of teeth.

Zoo veterinarian Dr. André Schüle emphasized the exceptional care Fatou receives, allowing her to live comfortably in her own enclosure, separate from the younger, more boisterous gorillas. He noted that at her age, she deserves the peace and quiet she enjoys.

Fatou's remarkable age not only makes her a beloved resident of the Berlin Zoo but also an important ambassador for her endangered species, the western lowland gorilla. Her long life serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

From all of us at Newsyly, we wish Fatou a very happy 68th birthday and many more peaceful years to come!
